For centuries the myth existed that rodent Arctic Lemmings annually became gripped by fits of madness and in their masses dived over cliffs to commit suicide.
As with most myths this theory has now been disproven – as a myth. The scientific truth is that packs of Lemmings over-populate themselves and suddenly become gripped with a panic to move and expand. The rodent is a good swimmer and survives stretches of water and thus they dive and swim to acquire new territory to enable more freedom – and expansion.
However, it is a known fact that nature moves to regulate its own balance and led the scientist Charles Darwin to evolve the Survival of the Fittest which dealt with the evolution of a species to adapt and change while those that did not adapt and change i.e. dinosaurs, in time became naturally extinct.
Is COVID-19 nature’s way of regulating itself in a world that has become vastly overpopulated, a way because the very workings of nature have been disrupted by humanity, leading to climate changes, our seas becoming clogged in plastic and in general total disruption of natural habitat and the requirement to produce more food to feed more mouths – fuelled by the great absorption of financial return?
Humanity is generally malicious and no matter how much religions insist that in its very heart humanity is good, understanding and compassionate, this is not so and has never been so. Humanity is malicious – full stop.
The maliciousness has become paramount in the inventions aired to explain COVID-19. The first was that China is at fault because its people boiled and ate bats. The Americans said China had purposely spread the virus to level off with the West. The Chinese retaliated and said the Americans were putting about the damage to harm the Chinese economy. The Russians said the Americans had invented the virus and released it in China.
On and on it goes.
However, is the real explanation a more simple and truthful one? Nature has reacted to reassert itself in situations that were becoming beyond control?
Modern communications have enabled instant relays of developments and this in turn has resulted in wholesale global panic and - like the Lemmings – has humanity been herded into insanity?
What nature has not calculated is the wholesale economic damage that has been caused and this has led to entrenchments and unashamed attempts to make political or financial gain out of a wholly alarming situation.
Sadly to say, locally this has been led by the Nationalist Party with accusations the Government is not doing anything, is not doing enough, is not dealing with the situation and all kinds of wild accusations – all based on ridiculous conceptions this may be the key to their once more gaining political power.
Many others have adopted the Primus Inter Pares attitude that they are more important than anybody else and must be bailed out by the Government in the current crisis. This includes hotel, restaurants, bars, media houses and employers in general.
HOWEVER, and above all else, it is the health and welfare of the population that comes first and foremost. To help out all these sectors the Government requires funds; where will the funds come from? Normally from the people, their taxes, their VAT, their licences, their NI payments – but all have been suspended. The EU Funds made available are being wisely applied by the Government. The health authorities are performing miracles.
It is a vicious circle that has to be tackled with calmness and planning and not “a grab as much as I can stampede”.
Is everybody and are all sectors cooperating? NO because at basis of heart many people are selfish and malicious – and nature will take its course with the emergence of the strong and destruction of the weak.
