Are we the greatest hypocrites in the world? A dollop of fleshy hysteria from sick minds
Nowadays, the Maltese Islands are getting accustomed to being the best in this, the best in that, in the top three worldwide and so on and so forth.
Some people in the Maltese Islands may as from henceforth now make another claim, an undisputed claim. That claim is that of being the greatest hypocrites in the world.
Over THIRTY YEARS ago I taught English Language lessons to foreign students for a local but international agency, one-to-one personal training.
One day I had a young German girl student who was extremely pretty, extremely clever and a very serious young teenager.
One morning she said, “May I ask you a question?”
“Yes sure, go ahead”, I replied.
“Can you please explain why so many Maltese girls who visit Paceville dress as if they are prostitutes? They are almost naked!”
That was THIRTY YEARS ago and of course she was right and perfectly accurate in her description.
Last weekend, THIRTY YEARS later, we had the Lost & Found Music Festival around Qawra and Bugibba. Most of the media went to town because much of our media is also a Mecca for Hypocrites run by Hypocrites. They reported a “public outcry of protest” at the “shameful” modes of dress of some.
That was because a handful of foreign youths (mainly British) went about, some almost baring asses and some almost baring tits, a huge outcry came out from a few with words like “disgraceful”, “disgusting”, “obscene”, “disturbing” etc.
WHAT A LOAD OF HYPOCRITICAL BULLSHIT!
Now everybody well knows that if you go to ANY beach/seaside resort or disco in Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus and anywhere along the northern shores of the Mediterranean you will see much the same scenes without anybody batting a single eyelid, on every day and night throughout the summer.
But in Malta – heavens forbid! We are the greatest moral models in the world, the champions of virtue, the paragons of good taste.
And hence journalists approached the Minister for Tourism Konrad Mizzi and asked him what he intended to do about all this and what was his opinion of it! Naturally he was amazed to be posed with such a stupid set of questions and said his role was to look after greater things and not stupid trivialities.
Go to Paceville on any evening and you will see much the same thing night-in, night-out.
Indeed, a lot of much ado about nothing at all – as if we are impounded inside some cast iron surrounding wall of strict morality.
And all notwithstanding that -
International porno sites researchers from PORNHUB and HAMSTER X (two of the leading porno sites worldwide) class Maltese viewers to be among “the most avid”.
For centuries Malta was constantly an active prostitution centre because of the vast numbers of passing by mariners and military personnel. All the activity was well-known, the economy thrived on it as did institutions like the Church who willingly accepted the votive gold and silver offerings of prostitutes and pimps, as well as their money.
Go to Paceville or any disco on any evening and you will see much the same thing.
So, what next? Back to the ‘ghonella’? Close down Paceville? Censor all the porno sites? Wrap women wearing bikinis in newspapers as we used to do in the 50s and 60s?
What more bullshit will we come up with next?
