Tear up the history books – Simon Busuttil and Edwin Vassallo re-write our political and religious h

In the former Soviet Union history used to be re-written every 15 minutes or so depending on the flavour of the moment.

You could go to sleep in the evening having been declared a Hero of the Soviet Union because you have championed The Voice of the Workers (UHM style) and a Defender of the People (current PN style) and wake up in the morning being declared a villain and a traitor.

The old history books would have been withdrawn from everywhere and new re-written “history” will have replaced them.

Well, the trend seems to have caught us up in Malta as over the last six years we have had re-written our political and religious history.

Let us start with the religious aspect. Since my very early childhood I was drilled to show great respect and veneration to Our Lady of Sorrows as the Mother of Jesus Christ who had endured great sorrow and passion to see her son suffer and finally be crucified on Calvary Hill between two criminals.

Her processions were followed by thousands a week before Good Friday and pictures and effigies of her were in all churches and homes, dressed solemnly in mauve and purple, her sorrows expressed in her eyes, tears dribbling down her cheeks.

Then recently, lo and behold, I awoke one morning to the news that one, Member of Parliament EDWIN VASSALLO had officially said in Parliament that we have to forget the old Lady of Sorrows, because we now have a new one – that is, one Daphne Caruana Galizia!

Well, well I thought – that’s a turn up for the book ... so I made comparisons to try and figure out some kind of relativity, some relationship that either categorised them on equal standing or otherwise made this Daphne Caruana Galizia so important as to actually merit taking the nomination.

It turned out that the late DCG (with due respect to her having been murdered in a most cruel manner) was the direct opposite of everything the Mother of Jesus Christ embodied in her love and compassion for humanity.

Out of respect for the dead I will not go into further details. Suffice to say that MY Lady of Sorrows always was and will remain, the Mother of Jesus Christ.

I was further surprised that Malta’s Archbishop Scicluna and the Church in Malta did not even bother to condemn this piece of foul heresy and declare Vassallo to be a heretic. Still, I guess that is one of the reasons that Church attendance is sinking by the minute.

Then – a further surprise. Our political history has been changed too! I always had it in mind that our national heroes and patriots were people like Toni Bajada, Jean Parisot de la Valette, Mikiel Anton Vassalli, Dun Karm our National Poet etc.

Yet now, no longer, because we have a new set of “patriots” and “heroes” that we have to venerate. So, throw out the old and bring in the new classed as being “real patriots” and apparently not the unsuitable crowd aforementioned.

This new piece of history came into being when Member of Parliament SIMON BUSUTTIL stood up in the House and declared that Malta’s “real patriots” are now David Casa, Roberta Metsola and Francis Zammit Dimech!

Well, well, who would have believed it? I was always taught that being a “patriot” means loving your country, defending it at all times and even being prepared (or having already done so) to lay down your life in defence of your country.

Apparently not, according to The Honourable Simon Busuttil - now, to be a “real patriot” you have to spend six years damaging, denigrating, vilifying and harming your country on the world stage and particularly in Europe so as to damage its governance, cripple its foreign investment and in turn causing the maximum amount of damage to your country’s citizens by inflicting maximum damage on your country’s economy.

My goodness, how times have changed!

The actions of Edwin Vassallo and Simon Busuttil have rendered the former Soviet Union “historians” as being mere starters, mere naive beginners in the art of distorting history and lying about it.
