ON A PATH OF SELF-CONTRIVED IMPLOSION – it is destroying the PN but is direly endangering the countr

It has now become crystal clear that the Opposition Nationalist Party has set its course – a course of self-constructed, self-explosive-implosion for which there are two main reasons.

The first is the clearly abominably bad leadership in the last few years resulting in two astounding electoral debacles. One would expect that in the face of such devastating defeats a massive exercise of self-appraisal would take place through a critical analysis on the basis of “what are we doing wrong – and how can we get it right?”.

Apparently, some analysis was made but resultantly the conclusion was within the theatrical “Carry On” series, as if totally oblivious of the debacles through which the electorate clearly and loudly pronounced. So the PN carried on along the same path, one of total negativity, doom and despondency and initially a colossal flop of a so-called coalition with the so-called Democratic Party that heaped further ignominy on the PN, resulting in the loss of a further two Parliamentary seats.

A group set-out to implement the necessity of a change of leadership and successfully did so on a ticket of embarking “on a new way”. Surely, one expected this to open the path for new opportunity to reform and re-launch. To the contrary, it is proving to be a path for regress within the PN because it has revealed enormous splits.

Clearly, the new leadership is being regarded by the old rump as a rudely abominable intrusion of “outsiders” trying to “invade” the “Divinely-appointed Inner Sanctum”. This was being cosmetically-fronted by Dr Simon Busuttil but said to be manipulated by the late Daphne Caruana Galizia and Richard Cachia Caruana.

How dare jumped-up “nobodies” have the affront to carry out such an invasion? Everything under the sun was conceived to try and block “the invasion” – but all failed, and rather than concede, and accept the clear message the party grass-roots was sending, a civil war broke out and is increasing in intensity by the minute.

The latest is an exchange of tweets between two party boys on opposite sides.

As the PN set itself up as a running target in the past I admit I was in the forefront of taking swipes and making sarcastic remarks. I have been thinking about this and I have reassessed.

They are simply not worth my attention and they are not worth wasting time and space over. If they want to self-destruct, so be it – the quicker, the better.

Opinion polls are clearly showing where the public stands. The intensive barrage of disdain that is being aimed at the Labour Party is in fact strengthening it; unfortunately, it is also doing untold damage to the country and its people – but an obsession is a great danger and by placing the country in great danger they are merely endangering themselves and the electorate will hold them to account.

I have always admired the former US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and leave the PN with some of his most eloquent quotations:

  • In our seeking for economic and political progress, we all go up - or else we all go down.

  • A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, has never learned how to walk forward.

  • A reactionary is a somnambulist walking backwards.
