EVEN THE WALLS HAVE EARS – plotting, fabricating, denigrating, maligning, back-stabbing … that is th

What a shame that William Shakespeare is no longer with us. He would have had a field day in modern-day Malta. In his famous play ‘Julius Caesar’ he penned the much-quoted phrase “even the walls have ears” alluding to the corridors in Rome, proliferating with plots, groups huddled in corners darkly plotting downfalls, the same plotters denouncing each other and a field day of back-stabbing and besmirching.

That is the stage set by Malta’s so-called ‘Opposition’ whose major, primary task is that of opposing and trying to thwart each other as they additionally blithely continue to besmirch, harm and damage their own country in an egocentric rat-race to emerge top of a mound of stinking, festering rubbish which they themselves have contrived and created.

Let us take the small and inconsequential fry first.

In the Maltese language we have the word “cercura” which, in his Maltese-English Dictionary Joseph Aquilina explains as “a person of vulgar habits; a person who exhibits uncivil or vulgar behaviour in public”. And there we have Marlene Farrugia from top to bottom. Into this vulgar vortex we have also seen Godfrey Farrugia slip. Now, I take Dr Farrugia to normally be a mild-mannered and kind man – but desperation makes a person do all sorts of abnormal things to clutch at straws.

This included him a couple of days ago being ordered by the Speaker to leave the House Chamber because of his dreadfully uncivil behaviour. Who would have thought that Godfrey Farrugia would be reduced to such a humiliating position?

And why are the Farrugias clutching at straws? Well, there is not even the slightest chance they will be enabled to return to the Labour Party and they have been distanced by the Nationalist Party after duping the stupidly naive Simon Busuttil – and now they are out on a limb – having burned their own bridges.

The limb they are on is that they do not have the remotest chance of being re-elected to Parliament and this therefore is their swansong in the Parliamentary arena.

Now, let us move to the main phalanx of the Opposition, a situation in which during a so-called protest march the deposed Busuttil marches at the head of the column, surrounded by his cronies, while the actual Opposition Leader Adrian Delia and therefore Busuttil’s successor shuffles uncomfortably at the back surrounded by his own cronies while having placards shoved in his face denouncing him for slurring the murdered venomous blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia who did her best to dirty him and his retaliation of describing her as a “bicca blogger” – a derogatory description of her blogging ability.

Twenty-four hours later the late blogger’s son, Matthew Caruana Galizia comes out with guns blazing in writing that Delia’s badly-decided decision to attend the ‘protest’ was nothing more than a ploy to gain some popularity, going on to describe him with the scorn that his late mother poured on Delia i.e. that he has a background of mixing with pimps who prostitute women, money laundering and mixing with ‘criminal heavies’.

And why all this unsavoury and shamefully distasteful exhibitionism – because the PN clique that was leading the party, headed in the opinion of many as being DCG herself, using Simon Busuttil as a parrot mouthpiece, wanted to retain the status quo and against all the odds Delia overturned their apple cart and wants to get rid of the clique.

The late US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was once asked why he was not responding to his Senate Opposition and his reply was brief and classical:

“Why bother to attack the Opposition when they are making such a good job of killing each other?”

Unfortunately, our problem in Malta is deeper than that. Not only are the Opposition killing themselves off they are also hurting, damaging, besmirching and trying to destroy their own country.

What a shameful and treacherous clique, a veritable mound of stinking, festering rubbish. They are not only trying to destroy themselves but their own country while pretending to have a “nationalist” love of it.

How more treacherous can one get?
