And having created the Wonders of the World – on the Seventh Day, God created the Nationalist Party

The reaction of the Nationalist Party to yesterday’s Budget was much as expected – negative, pointless, fruitless, without ideas or imagination ... in short a load of waffle that originates from nowhere and leads to nowhere.

Now, this is a political party that in the past when in Government, they piled on National Debt year after year (left there for future generations to cope with) and for whom the word “surplus” was NOT in their dictionary.

When in Opposition they opposed or negatively criticised every measure introduced by a Labour Government to bring about progress and relief for the population and their families. You name it – they opposed it, whether votes for women, whether free education for all, whether free health for all or whether Children’s Allowances. The Rainbow Revolution caused them shock and revulsion – and still does. Additionally they neglected and failed to introduce free child care and free transport for school children.

Their most notable mark was to send energy prices sky high and then follow up for many years saying they were happy to have done so.

In poco parole – they are not worth bothering about ... even though they go about comporting themselves as one of God’s Wonders of the World!

However, what does concern me is the reaction of some groups who play a dithering game and try and ride two horses at once. They do not want to praise the Budget and draw the anger of the PN for having done so and they do not want to harshly criticise to risk angering the PL.

They dither carefully along the middle of the road.

Take the Malta Chamber of Commerce. According to them the Government has failed to place more investment to bolster competitivity! They followed this up with a long list of moans about the bad reputation of institutions, lack of skills, local market structures and financial structures.

Naturally, they failed to mention these were all inherited anyway from past PN Governments IN ADDITION to which there is all the malicious harm and damage heaped on the country by people like David Casa, Jason Azzopardi, Simon Busuttil and the Caruana Galizia family. That of course is not important or of any consequence.

Has the Malta Chamber of Commerce ever, even ONCE, criticised any of the above for all the damage they have sought to do? Naturally not - Heavens forbid!

The Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) lamented of the Budget’s “dry” attitude toward the teaching profession and failing to provide “incentives” to attract new human resource into the sector.

I do not want to criticise either the MUT or the teaching profession – but do they think they are the only persons in the world that matter? Yes, their job has its unpleasant phases; yes, it may sometimes cause them stress; yes, today’s children and parents may be awkward. But what else is new?

The country’s working population has many, many sectors. Which sector does not face these problems?

Perhaps one day they should try working on a production line in a manufacturing factory with a supervisory hovering about them throughout their shift, wanting to know why an operator having a bad cold keeps blowing their nose and wasting time, why they spent two minutes too long in the toilet and why are they not reaching their production target and will thus have to report them for disciplinary action about this.

No, this was not a spectacular Budget because this is not a spectacular Government. It is a Budget built on commonsense, reliability, sustainability and stability because this is a Government of commonsense, it is reliable and creates sustainability and stability – as a Government should do.

How stupid too of media stations broadcasting people interviews with them blurting out “I want more money and hope the Budget will give me more money”.

It just does not enter their fat heads that the Government can easily dish out millions of euro – but where will the money come from? Perhaps they think if the Government digs in the sands at Ghadira and Armier they will find hundreds of boxes packed with gold and diamonds and be able to finance everything.
